Information Institute Launches Web Portal to Facilitate Public Library Hurricane Preparedness and Response

The FSU Hurricane Project has been featured on FSU.com

The Information Use Management & Policy Institute (Information Institute) directed by Charles R. McClure, Francis Eppes Professor at the College of Information, Florida State University (FSU) has officially launched its web portal: Hurricane Preparedness and Response for Florida Public Libraries. The portal provides a wealth of information and resources for public librarians and others to prepare for and recover from hurricanes and other disasters.

The portal was developed as part of a $311,440 grant awarded by the Florida Catastrophic Storm Risk Management Center at Florida State University’s College of Business to assist public libraries and local communities to better plan for and respond to hurricanes. The Information Institute has partnered with the State Library and Archives of Florida, directed by Judith Ring, Lyrasis, directed by Kate Nevins, and Florida’s Multi-type Library Cooperatives and public libraries throughout the region as well as federal, state, local and community agencies concerned with Florida hurricane preparedness and response.

Florida public libraries have provided a range of useful hurricane and disaster preparation and response services and activities, but there has been no systematic effort to identify the activities, best practices, guidelines and services provided or to better organize, coordinate, and assist all Florida public libraries to provide these hurricane/disaster planning and response services.

The web portal includes information on public library service roles, along with associated best practices and implementation guidelines; resources to assist public librarians and others to prepare for and recover from hurricanes and other disasters; and interactive blogs and wikis for public librarians, emergency managers, and other to share information, resources, and best practices.

The FSU Hurricane Project has been featured on FSU.com

For further information or for those who have knowledge and experience in dealing with public library hurricane preparedness and response, please contact Joe Ryan, Project Coordinator jzryan@earthlink.net or Charles R. McClure cmcclure@lis.fsu.edu at the Information Institute.
